Check out these new tin boxes that we just got in today! Really, these are must have for organized hoarders (like me) of small cool items and fans of cool graphic design. :-) Really nicely made and printed with such fun, silly colorful artwork. They are fun to touch and hold and open AND close! We have four different designs in the large boxes and six different designs in the smaller size.

The small "pocket" boxes are an exact replica of a 1920's cigarette case and retail for the very reasonable price of $6.00 each! The bigger boxes are an exact replica of a 1920's tin cigar box including a riveted bracket to hold the top open, for the measly peasly sum of $15.00!

Also in today are these simply beautiful greeting cards from Hope for Women, who offer fair trade eco friendly products made exclusively by women.

The card series is called "Portraits of El Salvador" and are all handmade by women whose homes in El Salvador’s highland cloud forest were destroyed by a devastating earthquake and mudslides. Each card features a cool little printed drawing of a lovely lady with some fabulous hairdos made entirely of REAL little dried flowers and grasses!

There are over a dozen different flower types available and every single card is unique and one of a kind! They reflect the style and creativity of the individual artisan who selected each flower, frond and sprig of greenery and placed them just so. I truly love them all and also think they would also look fantastic in little frames as hanging on your walls! The blank cards with envelopes are sold for $5.50 each, it truly is hard just to choose one favorite style... get a few for yourself and stash some away for a card you can be proud to give. Great as a Mother's Day or anyday card! So special and good for the world too!

Jellycat plush from England, just in time for Spring!

As cute as these lil fellas are, their cuteness is NOTHING compared to their softness and sweet floppiness! Be sure to give them a little love next time you come in and feel for yourself... :-)

We just got in a restock on the Hobbes-esque tiger and stumpy legged donkey and a few new friends arrived too!! The long legged giraffe is one of Rosemary's favorites for hugging and loving as well as the tiny lambey. Lambey is just the right size for her little nine-month old sized hand to get a good strangle neck grip on and carry him all around with her all day long. Oh yes! We also got in lovely chocolate bunnies who would make a great springtime gift!

We put Rosemary on top of the big pile of Jellycat plush as we were working on pricing them and she squealed with joy! You can't miss her sincere sweet smile as she looks into the face of a new little lion friend! She really seems to be loving plush toys of all kinds more and more, she has a death strangle grip on her lil lambey's neck right now... :-)

Paper Blossoms Pop-Up Book = Lovely and Amazing

We just got in a lovely pop up book of flower bouquets! The arrangements are totally intricate and colorful. Just *pop* open this book and viola instant table centerpiece that doesn't wilt or stink! I think this is such a creative and sweet idea. My mom sent one to my Grandmother recently and she just loved it... :-)

I wanted to share with you all an amazing find that my friend Sarah J. sent to me. It is beautiful, fun little drawings for the price of a hamburger at Chili's... lol - not that we eat hamburgers at Chili's... no offense if YOU do though... :-)

Artist and comic stripper Dustin Harbin came up with what I think is an ingenious plan... to take over the wall space of citizens, one quarter size sheet of paper at a time. He asks that you send him just a few words of direction, nothing too esoteric and he quickly sends you some actual real live artwork! I immediately ordered 5 pieces and received them within one week. They were all amazing and magical.

The one posted above is called "Bear and Bird Tea Party" and was my favorite of the bunch. They are just SO civilized. I'm not going to to reveal which are my other four pieces, go and check them out yourself on Dharb's Flickr page and see if you can guess...

For this Saturday night at the Bear and Bird Gallery in Lauderhill, circle gets the square in an all out grudge match of equally sided proportions! We've got ourselves a locals only group art show that may very well, impact history in a way that could only be described as a swift kick square in the nuts. Bigger, badder and brighter than Times Square with whores and more fired up than Tianamen Square on College Night, the Bear and Bird's "Be There Be Square" opening will astound, confound, repulse and convulse you right back into your corner.

Artists from around the block, were given one simple rule in designing their masterpieces....your creation must be equal on all four sides. That's right motherfuckers, this baby's gotta be square.

And yours truly, Todd Nolan will be squaring it up with the lot of them when "You get the bees, and I'll grab the honey" is unveiled to the general public.

The opening reception will be 4 equally fantastic hours of hobnobbing and globetrotting, from 6-10, this SATURDAY night.....so don't miss it, nerds.

New Bear and Bird artwork by Allison Reimold!

I just received the finely detailed and totally killer piece that I commissioned Allison Reimold to create for us! She was awesome to work with and I was so happy that she was willing to share her fabulous talent! The original piece is graphite on watercolor paper.

This new "Bear and Bird" artwork will used for the upcoming Bear and Bird t-shirt for 2011. I'm thinking waterbased black ink on heathered gray super soft shirts... goal is to have them DONE by early March. :-)

I think my favorite part of this piece is the bear's claws and the girl's expression.

At right you can also check out the sketch version of this piece. It is It is always interesting to see the process before the finished piece.

Allison is currently based in Los Angeles, California. We have a few of her original graphite pieces available in our current Small Stuff exhibition, only up for another week!

About the artist in his own words: "Hello there, I'm Danny Brito, but I mainly go by Dannyb or Bee. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida and currently reside a little house in a little room where I have more art supplies than clothes. Beautiful painting by Tatiana Suarez, local Miami gal moved on to NYC!

Hello anyone and everyone who actually looks at my all too rarely updated blog! As some of you may know, I had a beautiful baby girl last May (born on my birthday May 20!) who is taking up quite a bit of my free time, not that I really had any to spare! I can't really blame her sweetness anyway, since I was too rarely updating this blog even before she was born! lol!

Anyway... blah blah blah, I resolve to make this better. It is such a useful tool to share with you all and it gets neglected.

I just sent the 2011 Bear and Bird business card off to overnightprints.com - they are pricey, but do such a great job! Free spot UV looks gorgeous and you can get rounded corners (totally not free). Rounded corners = baby safety...! Just kidding, I like them since they look purty. Every year since we started (this is going to be our fifth anniversary!) I've created a yearly card using some "Bear and Bird" artwork. I'll have to dig up the older ones to share here as well.

This year's artwork is by Tatiana Suarez, who participated in our very first art exhibition back in February 2007! I loved her piece then and knew she was something special. It has been really quite amazing (though not surprising) to see her work blossom and develop more and more all the time. A Miami native, sweet & lovely Tati moved to New York over a year ago and she is missed! She has come back for the past two years and done really impressive murals for Primary Flight in Miami's Wynwood art district and has been showing steadily in galleries around the country!

The painting she did for me is extra specially special since it was commissioned as a birthday gift for me from my husband Tate. Tati was in the midst of doing a mess of paintings for an upcoming solo show, so she did a sketch of the piece for Tate to give to me as sneak peek of what was to come.

The night before my birthday, Tate and I plus a group of friends went down to Miami to hear our friends from Primary Flight speak at the MOCA - we then went out to an early birthday dinner at Michael's Genuine, which was fun and really yummy even though being REALLY pregnant it was hard to maneuver around the tight space and I had to pee a heck of a lot! :-p My favorite part was the petit fours for dessert... too delicious. Happy birthday was sung and we all said goodnight... driving home from Miami (about a 30 minute drive) the clock struck midnight and Tate turned to me and said "Happy Birthday!!!" --- literally at 12:01am my water broke. Insanity! I figure this kid always heard me say a million times that she was going to be born on my birthday and once she heard her cue... BAM! She was about 5 days early based on the estimated date of arrival. So we went home and packed and before we left for the hospital Tate presented me with the beautiful sketch you see here, with the promise of a painting to come. <3 I loved it right away.

After Rosemary Jane was born and we came home I emailed Tati and asked her to add a bit of rosemary to the painting to represent... well, you know! The painting came out beautifully, as you can see for yourself and represents such a beautiful change of things to come. We have a great lineup of exhibitions in 2011, I'm looking forward to experiencing them all - hopefully with YOU too!!

As some of you MAY have noticed, I have been pregnant for the past 9 months! :-) I am happy to announce that I gave birth to a truly beautiful little girl on May 20th (my birthday too) - her name is Rosemary Jane!

“Propheseer”
A French apothecary and reputed seer who published collections of prophecies that have since become famous worldwide. He is best known for his book Les Propheties, which has rarely been out of print since his death. Nostradamus has attracted a following that, along with the popular press, credits him with predicting many major world events.

Opening tonight and featuring the work of over 120 genuine South Florida's artists! Take a look at what life in South Florida is like as seen from the "inside" - the styles and subject matter really run the gamut in this group mega-show! :-)

Twice a year we hold "all local welcome" art shows, this is the first one for 2010 - always popular, it is a great way to see new talent for local artists who want their work to be seen by the multitudes!

If you can't make it yourself to the opening tonight, you should be there in "spirit" and leave us some comments on the flickr photoset of the exhibition. And if you're the sort that likes to sit back and let the world unfold in front of you... you can even view it as a slideshow!

Umami: New artwork by Danielle Estefan, Tatiana Suarez and Natali Martinez

Opening on Saturday, January 16 and running through February 27, 2010 we will showcase the fine visual delights of three of my favorite artists! Here is a little bit of background info on all three gals and an explanation of this exhibitions "weird" name! :-)

"Umami" is the relatively unknown 5th taste category in the human mouth. It is described as the "savory" or "fresh" taste buds! http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/senses/umami.html I was intrigued by the simple fact that it is relatively unknown and also savory and fresh, I felt that it fit like a glove to describe three of my favorite rising art stars.

Danielle "Knee" Estefan

Miami-based Danielle Estefan (b. 1984) uses an illustrative style to create cute and humorous work. Despite the fact that her characters often appear sad or cynical, hinting at a darker undercurrent beneath innocent facades, Estefan's paintings are playful and lighthearted.

A former student of the Design and Architecture program at the New World School of the Arts, Estefan works primarily in acrylics, and uses a variety of surfaces, such as particle wood or construction paper, to create a smooth, matte finish. She will often integrate the surfaces into the work as a background, or use the texture as skin tone for her figures. "I like to use a lot of brown, earthy, surfaces to compliment the colors in my paintings, which tend to have a lot of pink and turquoise in them," said Estefan. When she's not painting, the artist fills up sketchbooks that are sometimes used as references for future works.

The goal (and achievement) of Estefan's paintings are to reflect a mood. The work is primarily made for the purpose of sheer enjoyment -- both for the artist and the viewer. She has fun with the finished product as well as the process, and this carries through in each piece.

Tatiana Suarez

Tatiana Suarez (b. 1983) is a Brooklyn-based Miami native. This emerging artist is an alumni of the University of Miami's Graphic Design program, and also works as a freelance illustrator. Her charming style is distinctive -- first, the trademark eyes that draw the viewer into a beautiful and surreal world. Suarez takes full advantage of the oil paint's ability to create creamy, soft images on canvas. Rich with symbols that stem from her Brazilian and El Salvadorian heritage, subjects appear as if they are under water, frozen in lovely stillness. The doe-eyed figures look childlike, but also exude sexual overtones, ornamented with plants, insects and other unsettling accompaniments. Beauty is presented concurrently with exotic -- even creepy -- creatures to create enchanted narratives.

Suarez recently participated in the Primary Flight street art exhibition which took place during Art Basel Miami, December 2 - 6, 2009. The artist's finished product is a mural that remains intact in Miami's Wynwood Arts District. In addition, Suarez regularly exhibits work in galleries across the United States, including Bear & Bird Gallery, Lauderhill, Florida.

Natali Martinez
Venezuelan-born Natali Martinez's (b.1983) work is the perfect blend of the adorable and the surreal. Each piece is a dreamlike vignette, an odd and humorous combination of subjects, such as a dancing chinchilla or a girl holding a very tiny dog in the palm of her hand. Martinez's use of movement and cartoony figures result in lively little paintings, which are absurdly cute and sometimes perplexing.

Martinez, a graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale school of Animation, works as a commercial illustrator and currently resides in Brooklyn, NY.

This three-person show at Bear and Bird Gallery will feature new, original paintings by Danielle Estefan, Tatiana Suarez and Natali Martinez. Prices are still within the range of new art collectors, while the quality of the work and charm of the artist behind them point towards a bright future for these three. These are the type of artists you will look back on in the years to come and wish you had bought when it was in your price range!

New event at our gallery! Art Talk with Therry Norton!

I was thinking that I really wished there was a way that I could help to *educate* people about the art and artists we show here at the gallery. Things are just so much more interesting when you know tasty little tidbits about them! The only person who I could imagine would be "the one" to fill this need and role in my life was my dear, smart and pretty friend Therry Norton!

I pitched the idea to her as something we would start next year and she was pumped to start immediately! So yay for us!

I am proud to present to you, the very first "Art Talk with Therry Norton" Sunday, September 27th at 3pm. Since this is the maiden voyage, we are going to play it by ear and see how it goes in terms of length, but we're guessing about 30-40 minutes. Through Art Talk, host Therry Norton will discuss similarities within the works, focus on a few works in detail, and open a dialogue regarding the relevance of this work.

The focus for this "Art Talk" will be our current exhibition "Off the Needle" which features the artwork of a wide range of tattoo artists in our own South Florida tattoo community! There is so much great work in this show, be sure to come by and see it before the exhibition closes on October 10th or check it out online if you are non local (or lazy).

I swear, I feel like everytime I get a chance to post something up here all I do is apologize for not having time to do a better job of keeping it updated! :-) ...and people ask why I don't have a Twitter account! :-0 One more thing to update, no thanks! I do a pretty good job of keeping the website up to date though, which is our home base of sorts. If only I could either clone myself or add a few hours to each day. Anyway... blah blah blah.

Stitch Wars is up in the gallery still for a few more weeks, it is really awesome - check it out if you haven't already! Getting prepared for the upcoming shows and setting in stone our 2010 schedule. Sigh... time sure flies!

This has been a long time coming! Danielle Estefan created the adorable illustration above for use on our Bear and Bird t-shirt quite a bit ago and due to extreme busyness it kept getting pushed lower on my 'to do' list. Also, I was endlessly searching for "just the right t-shirt" to print it on. :-)

Once I decided on the shirt I finally got to start with how the final colors would end up being printed! A job in itself... :-)

What you see above is a photoshop mockup of the final shirt, with a scan of the actual shirt material in the background. I decided to go with an American Apparel Track Tee (so soft) in this gorgeous indigo blue color. The white will actually be a discharge (bleach) print and then we're going over that with three waterbased ink (soft) colors. I have high hopes that it will come out even lovelier than the sample image. Ordered the blank shirts today so fingers crossed these should be on our shelves in about a month! Can't wait!!

Tate's Paint by Number Self-Portrait

My husband Tate had been dying to have a custom paint-by-number kit made up and our current art show, Me Me Me Me Me gave him the perfect excuse! ;-)

Tate chose a photo that was taken of him during our Halloween 2007 sale when he was dressed as D'artagnan from the Three Musketeers. The photo was taken by our friend Colby Katz who is a pretty big deal. You can see above the original photo and the finished painting.

Me Me Me Me Me: Self Portrait Group Show Open!

Oy vey! I seem to always forget to update my blog. I'm a bad girl. :-) I have to tell you that I just added a reminder to my iCal to put something up every Friday, so I don't think I will forget anymore! iCal is such a lifesaver for me, keeps everything straight so I don't have to worry about forgetting stuff! Having it on my iPhone too now makes it even better. :-)

Anyway, the ME ME ME ME ME art show opened this past Saturday night! Over 150 local artists created self-portraits for this show. It is quite a sight to behold! The walls are totally packed, I don't think I could fit anymore work up there!!

Last Sunday we held our latest StitchBird Workshop up here at Bear and Bird. :-) We learned to do some simple hand embroidery on hankies using Sublime Stitching iron-on patterns. Everyone did a really fantastic job, I was so proud! (wipes away a tear)

Tad Carpenter is an illustrator and designer living in Kansas City, Missouri. His work has been seen on clothing, books, magazines, album art, home decor, rock posters & retail graphics. Local artists subvert classic fairy tales in Bear and Bird's 3 of a Kind

Somebody give Fred Phelps a call: There's some blaspheming going on in Lauderhill. Painting on a double-hinged mirror with an ornate gold frame, Fort Lauderdale artist Todd Nolan created "Ham for Holidays," a reinterpretation of the "Three Little Pigs" fairy tale as the birth, crucifixion and resurrection of Christ.

We see wolves licking their lips as the piglet lies in its manger, and then prodding it with a stick as it suffers on the cross. Finally, the pig gets the last laugh, resurrecting itself with a yellow brick road ahead of it.

"When I was brainstorming ideas for this painting, I narrowed my choices of directions down to either the life of Christ or some random, fucked-up tale from the Book of Revelations," Nolan says. "In the midst of me thinking about it, my 2 1/ 2-year-old son, Jasper, began to yell that he wanted to watch his "Three Little Pigs" DVD. My brain merged the two thoughts into one and literally, within the blink of eye, every aspect of the painting fell into place, thanks to my little muse of an offspring."

The piece is one of about 50 in the group art show "3 of a Kind," on display at the Bear and Bird Gallery through Feb. 21. Gallery owner Amanda Magnetta-Ottati sought works from more than two dozen local and national artists connected around a theme of three-part art. The artists could choose their own style, size and arrangement.

"Some artists work well with a little direction," Magnetta-Ottati explains. "That's what makes it fun—to challenge them a little but not be dictating. Just give them a starting point. The goal is to be true to their own style while being cohesive to the whole."

Nolan was the only artist in the show who modeled his work after an ancient Christian triptych.

"Many years back, I went to Spain, where I visited a multitude of cathedrals and museums and saw many famous religious triptychs in person, like Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Garden of Earthly Delights,'" Nolan recalls. "So when Amanda approached me with the idea of doing a piece for this show, I knew immediately that I wanted to stick within the religious genre. Little did I know at the time that I would be the only artist to do so."

Nolan isn't the only artist in the show to subvert a fab le. Alessandro Echevarria, who recently moved to Brooklyn from Fort Lauderdale, contributed watercolors that trisect the faces of fairy tale heroes such as Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel and disembowel villains such as the Big Bad Wolf.

"I've always had this interest in stories, and how things work," he explains. "You're not expected to wonder how or why a wolf could swallow a child whole without chewing it or how that very child isn't asphyxiating in its stomach. These are the types of things I thought about as a kid.

"I just have lots of fun with deconstruction," he adds. "I've spent all of my life putting things together and taking them apart, both visually in my head and physically with my hands."

The show's other highlights similarly juxtapose childhood innocence with graphic or subversive underc urrents. Danielle Estefan's "Cock, Pussy and Weiner" finds naughty-looking girls mounting carousel rides of roosters, cats and dachshunds.

All the works in the show are for sale, many of them at affordable prices, helping to fulfill one of Magnetta-Ottati's goals of spurring art collecting.

Two years ago today we had the massively successful first art opening at Bear and Bird! We removed the velvet rope to the stairs the evening of February 3, 2007!

At the opening of 'For Love of Munny' over a thousand folks came to check it out (still can't believe it) and we've been busy working hard ever since.

New 70s Style Mountain Range Mural in the stairway!

Inspired by a DIY article in the fall issue of VenusZine, I decided to snazz up the plain blah gray walls with some fun colors! Doing it as a mountain range type mural made a doable project since we didn't have to get scaffolding or teeter on a tall ladder to try and reach up to our REALLY high ceilings! It took three days to complete. We started on a Thursday and finished hanging the prints back up by Friday evening. What do you think?! :-) I much prefer it over the old dirty grey walls!

Yes, we are getting slightly more professional with our artwork photography! Right after struggling to get the best possible shots of the artwork in last months Small Stuff show I decided to go ahead and get us a little popup photo studio! I was originally planning on ordering a cheapish "tabletop" setup from a catalog, but I snooped around online and read only bad reviews on them. Most said they were impossible to setup and break down and had weak lil lights.

I eventually honed in the EZ Cube website, which is kind of corny and poorly designed, but sincere with lots of information. These lil photo studios fold/twist down into a smallish flat disc - so easy storage!! They come in all kind of sizes, even big enough to photograph guitars! :-) I went with the 30" because I thought it would accommodate most of the artwork I need to photograph, some of course won't fit - but for now this will work awesome!!

I shopped around for lights and ended up ordered a pair of tabletop tripod lights with daylight fluorescent photo bulbs, for $60 off ebay. Not bad!

I finally got to use the setup this week to photograph the artwork for the new show here, Three of a Kind. The setup was really super-simple. I even watched the 20 minute (BORING) video of tips they sent, they taught up stuff like FOCUS! USE A TRIPOD! CLEAN WHATEVER YOUR PHOTOGRAPHING FIRST! The EZ cube has "unique" features such as the zip open top!

Needless to say, the photographs came out GREAT. One shot and they looked perfect. So... hooray! Be on the lookout for new and improved photographs of the artwork in our shows and snazzy product shots of merchandise in our webstore. :-)

Stitch Rock 2008 was a fantastic!

I'm happy to report that Stitch Rock, up in Delray's adorable Old School Square gymnasium was as wonderful as last year if not better! Amanda Watkin's (my partner in crime for StitchBird Workshops) puts on such a great event. There was a really nice variety of crafters and the setup was great!

We tried to bring an assortment of stuff you can find at Bear and Bird (+ Tate's) which is a pretty tall order since we have so many different types of merchandise. :-) I think we met our goal though and found some new customers who will make a trip to see us in person.

Skot Olsen Solo Show at Bear and Bird
Edgar Winter’s Got Nothing on Him

Skot Olsen is one of those painters for whom everything he does looks like a window in a magical world — one where bizarre creatures roam the land and humanity holds dark secrets. In Olsen’s creations devils walk among us, sowing the seeds of chaos, while mere mortals struggle against the awesome forces of nature. But you also get the feeling (as in Olsen’s “Black Water Harvest,” where fleets of ships ravage the ocean to capture giant squid) that the smaller, more fragile humans in his paintings command even more power than the mythical beasts that they hunt.

It’s this motif that informs Olsen’s recent work on Graphic Classics, a series of timeless tales of monsters and fantasy redone in graphic novel form. The series has covered larger than life monsters like Dracula, Doctor Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, and even Cthulu. For Olsen’s part, he’s recreated one of the most exemplary works of mankind’s power over nature: Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Olsen approached the comic’s creation with a painter’s touch, so instead of developing each page as a single piece of art, Olsen actually painted every panel individually. The process of simplifying his usually complex images to account for dialogue and script was challenging for him, Olsen says, but the end result is a book that has a uniquely artistic feel. Over 100 of these individual paintings will be on display this Saturday at Bear and Bird Boutique + Gallery (at Tate’s Comics, 4566 N. University Dr., Lauderhill) as part of the exhibit “Skot Olsen’s Frankenstein.” The opening reception takes place at 7 p.m., and Olsen will be there to talk about his work and sign copies of his new book. Re-creating a monster
Painter Skot Olsen gives new life to Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein'

It's been more than seven months since a fire destroyed two years' worth of painter Skot Olsen's work. The South Florida artist lost 20 paintings, most dealing with hallucinations and religion, in the blaze at Miami's Howard Golen Gallery. But Olsen, touched by the outpouring of support from friends, put the loss in perspective and got back to work. He is planning to unveil a new body of paintings with a maritime focus later this year. But first, he will sign copies of Volume 15 of "Fantasy Classics," a Graphic Classics compilation featuring a comic-book adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," this Saturday at Bear and Bird Gallery in Lauderhill. About 135 of the 200 paintings Olsen created for this book will be on exhibit. Recently, City Link Metromix.com interviewed the artist about the show.

Tell us about Graphic Classics.
Graphic Classics books adapt classic literature to comic-book form as a way to introduce young people to stories they might not readily pick up. Often, they pick one writer to focus on in an issue, so when Mary Shelley came up, they asked me to illustrate "Frankenstein."

Do you have any favorite illustrations?
My favorites are mostly on page 29 in the actual book. They are of the Monster discovering books and learning to read. Maybe I was on a roll that day, but I think these little paintings are some of the most interesting and collectible. I also like the panels where I was asked to paint a ship or the water. My current work in the fine-art world revolves around a maritime theme, so I think these were also successful.

What did you do to get in the groove for working on this project?
Naturally, I re-read "Frankenstein" but purposely did not watch any of the movies. I had a few lunches with my friend Novi, who reminds me of the Monster in more ways than one. I also listened to Mozart's "Requiem" at the start of every session to get me in the gothic mood.

Where did you create this work?
I work from a room in my house that I converted into a studio. It's very small, so I'll probably have to upgrade to another larger studio sometime next year.

Can you discuss the process of working on this?
The book was adapted for comic form by the writer Rod Lott and art-directed by Tom Pomplun. They sent me a script directing me to put this or that in each panel and how much text was to be included. I then decided how to arrange the elements of each panel in a way that moves the reader's eye along the story. Because of the number of panels, I had to focus on composition rather than detail, which was difficult for me because I tend to paint in a detailed style. It was an exercise in boiling down the ima ges to their raw form while meeting the needs of the story and following the direction of the writers. I enjoyed it, but don't think I'd want to do it again any time soon. It was a lot of work.

How big are the paintings and how will they be priced?
The acrylic-on-canvas boards range in size from 8 inches by 10 inches to 11 inches by 14 inches with the exception of the cover, which is 18 inches by 24 inches. The prices range from $75 to $200, with the cover—oil on canvas—being $2,000. My work normally sells in the mid-to-high thousands, so this is a way for entry-level collectors and fans to get an original of mine.

How does this work tie into your whole rebuilding process after losing so much in the fire?
This work was done last year long before the fire, but since most of my stock is destroyed, it's a way to pick up a few extra dollars. I have shows scheduled at the end of the year in Miami and in San Francisco. Until then, I have little means of making money, so this show may be a welcome relief. It also puts my art back in the public eye. While the fire has and continues to generate press, the kind of press I like are the stories about me actually participating in art shows. The fire temporarily knocked me out of the loop, but I must say, [it] has sharpened my focus and has given me new energy. I'm coming back swinging.

New Gypsy Rabbit Jewelry!

We get new stuff in all the time, as anyone who visits us knows.... and sometimes, when there is something special... I remember to blog about it! :-)

We just got in a bunch of really cute jewelry designed and handmade by Sarah Ockuly of Columbus, Ohio. Her company is called "Gypsy Rabbit" and as you can see from the photos (click photo to enlarge it), she does some really cute whimsical and funky stuff!!

Sarah included a note with my order, which explains what these are made of:
"I use sterling silver (.925) in all of my necklaces. Sterling will tarnish over time and with contact to oxygen. Many people like this "oxidized" look, but you can prevent tarnishing by keeping your jewelry in plastic baggies. They can also be cleaned with any commercial silver jewelry polish. All of my pendants are made of copper and melted glass. They are very sturdy, but as they are made of glass, they can chip or crack if dropped. Please give them the care you would any fine jewelry."

It is really hard to choose a favorite one, I'm personally torn between the "Green Eggs and Ham" and the "Love Whale"!

Sarah also had a good suggestion, which was that you can use the Love Whales as modern down low BFF necklaces. We have them facing both Left and Right. That way you and your BFF can have facing Love Whales! :-) So CUTE!!

Old Man Masks are Taking Over!

Amanda Magnetta, creative whirlwind and owner and operator of Bear & Bird Gallery (upstairs in Tate’s Comics) in Lauderhill, Florida knows a thing or two about art, style, and a DIY approach to life. Bear & Bird Gallery hosts awesome art shows, creative craft classes, and of course has a shop full of hand picked, aesthetically conscious goods. The gallery is a place for the community to connect, express, and inspire. We caught up with Lady Magnetta about her life in and out of the gallery, her inspirations, and her two adorable canine companions.

So, Why “Bear & Bird”?

When I was trying to come up with a name for the gallery/boutique space I was really stumped. I can’t tell you how many times I looked through the dictionary and thesaurus! Since our space is located in an upstairs loft area inside of TATE’S Comics (Established 1993, when my husband Tate was 17!) I originally tried to incorporate the word “TATE” into the name, but Gallery DecapiTATE just didn’t evoke the feeling I wanted! One morning inspiration struck me and I went over the my computer to see if the bearandbird.com was available! It was! Bear and Bird was born… it was perfect. You see, Bear and Bird are the nicknames my parents have called each other my whole life. My dad is “Bear” and my mom is “Bird” – I’ve never heard them call each other by their real names. As an added bonus, the two animals work beautifully as a visual and it has alliteration. Who doesn’t love alliteration?!

Most impressive work on your walls in the past year?

That’s a tough one! Our newest show “Yokai in Your Eye” is going to have a TON of amazing stuff in it. Technically, it isn’t on the walls yet (opens June 14), so I won’t count that one. Looking back, most recently I have to say that I was really impressed by a couple of pieces done by Sarah J. Pierce and Johnny Winslow. For our “Cute Attack” show (March 08); Sarah J. made a giant polaroid quilt! It featured a bear, a bird and a girl hanging out at a party and was inspired by a polaroid she found on Flickr. She even had giant thumbtacks to hang it on the wall with. For that same exhibition, Johnny did a painting called Teddysburg, which featured teddy bears and sock monkeys in the Battle of Gettysburg. The idea was a great take on the show’s theme and it was rendered beautifully in oil and colored pencil on wood. People got a real kick out of it too!

Favorite place on earth to bring your camera? Got the picture to prove it?

The first time I visit anywhere on vacation is always the best! On my first trip to Vegas a few years ago I think I took four hundred photos. We visited Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam in addition to all the crazy Vegas-y sights! Most recently though, I went to the Bahamas and brought my new crushproof-waterproof digital camera. We went to the awesome waterpark at Atlantis and I took it on all the slides and the rapids. All the other tourists were so jealous that I had a small camera that I could take underwater! ...and yes, I have HUNDREDS of pictures to prove it! I really have fun doing ‘experimental’ underwater photography. I can also proudly say that I was even a test user for the Frogeye and there is a photo of me in the booklet!

Got a super secret beach retreat spot?

Whenever possible Tate and I love to take an hour and half drive north to Jupiter. They have a fantastic dog-friendly beach there. Most dog beaches are pretty rocky and undesirable, since dogs are ‘second class citizens’, but this one is gorgeous! It has huge beach area with lovely soft sand. Both my adorable mutts love to dig holes to lay in and swim like furry little fish. Jupiter’s dog beach is not a secret, really, but it is definitely under appreciated… I wish it was closer!!

Favorite comic book character? Why?

It has been forever since I read it, but the one comic book character that most influenced my life was Hillary from the 3 issue Kitchen Sink series “The Dung Boys” – I loved the book and sent a letter to the writer/artist, Robb Conaway. This was over ten years ago and we’re still friends! We used to write each other elaborate letters via snail mail, but now we just email a quick hello once in a while. He’s my oldest friend whom I’ve never met in person, though I think someday our paths will inevitably cross.

Latest inspiration you just can’t seem to shake?

I’m not really sure how to answer this one… honestly, I get so much inspiration from all the artists that I am fortunate enough to work with and show in the gallery. I wouldn’t want to shake it, where would I be without them all?! Just a bunch of lousy blank walls, I guess. When coming up with ideas for upcoming shows, I just pluck them from the ether…. and by ether, I guess I mean my subconscious which is made up of my life experiences and obsessions past and present.

What’s the best place to find unique clothing in or around Lauderhill?

That’s a tough one. We actually sell some great t-shirts from Design By Humans and tokidoki here at Bear and Bird, other than that everything around town is mostly mass-produced and not really unique. If I want something unique, I go to etsy! You can find the most amazing, handmade, totally unique clothing there. We have a GIANT mall right nearby (Sawgrass Mills) and I’ll go there sometimes and maybe find one thing that I like enough to buy, I really enjoy browsing and people watching though!

Coolest craft class you’ve ever participated in?

This year we started holding monthly craft classes here at Bear and Bird! It is called StitchBird Workshops and it is run in collaboration with another Amanda who puts together the fantastic yearly craft extravaganza, StitchRock. Last months StitchBird Workshop taught us how to use a household iron to fuse layers of plastic shopping bags together, which melts them into a surprisingly durable tyvek-like material. We then used our plastic fabric to make wallets and pouches!

Hottest spot in town to grab a cool drink?

If we’re talking booze – I’d say you can’t miss visiting the historic Mai-Kai’s Molokai Bar during happy hour. You really can’t go wrong with 2 for 1 fancy tropical drinks in an amazing tiki bar! Definitely a great spot for picture taking too!!

Exactly what species of bear & bird do you imagine as the official mascots of the gallery?

I don’t know exactly what they ARE, but I know what they’re NOT! The bird is not an ostrich or penguin and the bear isn’t a teddy bear or a hairy guy! I have commissioned (and come across) quite a bit of artwork featuring a bear and bird and I leave it up to the individual artist to determine the exact species, they’re all good! Come to think of it, an ostrich wouldn’t be so bad! It definitely isn’t a vulture though, those are gross looking, too pink and fleshy.

What’s next?

We’re working on getting the Bear and Bird online shop setup! We actually have the start of something good now and will be building on it over the next few months, I want to be ready for holiday shopping season! I also plan on getting into publishing and doing more exclusive Bear and Bird merchandise lines, t-shirts, totes and jewelry… Personally, I’d love to spend some time learning embroidery and watercolor painting, as well as turning my backyard into a plant filled garden habitat!

You know how sometimes you come across something that makes you despair about how every cool thing that you've never even thought of has already been done...?

Well, here is another one and it is AWESOME!
It is a Japanese site where some talented artist-type people took some already amazing children's drawing and made them into PHOTOGRAPHS! They took great care in translating the colors and blobs into reality. Making costumes, hiring actors and amazing sets! When I think about the amount of talent that went into this, it boggles my tiny American mind.

Everything/Everyday: a Lomographesque photo exhibition
Pretend you're a tourist, but don't leave your home. See everything, every day a different way. The cult of Lomo is a habitual discovery and compulsive documentation of the typical and extra-ordinary... which is not necessarily an oxy-moron.

Show runs through May 2 - June 7, 2008

None of the photography in this show was creating through digital manipulation. All unusual effects are done in camera using different tricks and techniques.

This all photography show will feature the work of amateur local picture takers:
Sam Guss; Paige Place; Nicole Christian; Michelle Beasley; Kerry Ball; Ivylise Simones; Duane Hosein; The Calabrese Family; Bee; and Amanda Magnetta

All of the photographers in this exhibition have been alloted gallery space, with which they can fill as they choose. In that sense, this exhibition will has an installation aspect to it as well.

What is "lomographesque"? We coined the term "lomographesque" in reference to photography that has aspects of a "lomo" photo, but is not necessarily taken with a Lomographaphic Society brand camera. Lomography brand cameras are typically easy to use, amateur or toy cameras. They are very "low-tech" most using regular old 35mm film and requiring only regular processing, most are point and shoot and lots of fun. Using the term "lomographesque" allows us to embrace other means of creating the images, such as Polaroid cameras and digital cameras.

What makes a "lomographesque" photo is harder to define. Most of them have a certain personal quality... almost like a fuzzy memory or a scent. They can be blurry or razor sharp, shot from the hip or set on a tripod for long exposure fun. They can be somewhat described as "arty snapshots".

Lomography as an aspect of photography is something that is either loved or hated, depending on the person. At its heart I believe it is about experimentation and documentation, about connecting with other people and being creative, even if you can't draw a stick figure or write a love song. Others have a stricter idea of what lomography means and in the end it is a personal thing.

The very first StitchBird Workshop was a success!

Now that I think about it... I neglected to mention the new StitchBird project here on the Bear and Bird blog! Well, now is the time then!StitchBird Workshops are "gatherings of the crafty inclined" and we hope to have one once a month here at Bear and Bird! The name "StitchBird" is a mashup of Bear and Bird and StitchRock. StitchRock is a fantastic craft bazaar held yearly and put on by another lovely Amanda! :-) We have teamed up to make these crafty workshops happen and bring some more fun crafty opportunities to South Florida!

The first workshop that we held took place yesterday and the project was "Make a Stuffed Creature" - there were ten spots available and they filled up quickly! All the materials were provided as well as patterns and instruction. Some people opted to go totally freehand and some modified the provided patterns to make something unique and special. :-) Light refreshments were also provided and everyone enjoyed trying out some tasty Japanese delights.

I have just finished putting the photos up on Flickr (+ time lapse video) check it out and leave us some comments! Hope to see you at the next StitchBird Workshop!

Video of Raffle Drawing & Humane Society Dog Walk!

Dunno if I mentioned this before or not but we had a prize raffle to raise money for the Humane Society Walk for the Animals this year. Last year we gave a % of the sales from our first art show, "For Love of Munny"! Unfortunately, people are reluctant to "donate" money, and since we don't harass our customers we usually raise very little. But, with the incentive of an Orange Ringo Bear, $150 in TATE Bucks and $50 in TATE Bucks, we raised over $700!!

The video shows me doing the raffle drawing on camera to avoid any unfounded accusations of shenanigans and some footage of the dog walk on March 1, 2008. It was a lot of fun as always and the dogs had a great time. So many butts to sniff!!

Beautiful New Artwork!

I recently commissioned one of my favorite artists, May Ann Licudine, to create a piece of artwork that I could use to promote the gallery. I will probably use it for next year's business card and advertisements. It will also proudly hang behind my desk here at the gallery. :-) I will post a photo of it hanging once it arrives from the Phillipines. Hooray!!

It is absolutely beautiful (as all her work is) and I know that in person it will be even more amazing. I love her use of texture and color, and it is just SO sweet! May Ann knows how to use mixed mediums to achieve a special look that she desires... Her artwork reminds me of vintage greeting cards and Studio Ghibli, but in an entirely new and unique way.

Beautiful Mutants, The Visual Art of Mark Mothersbaugh opened this past Saturday night here at the Bear and Bird Gallery. It is some really interesting stuff, A study of humans via symmetry using photos both recent & vintage. Images pulled from man's past... then corrected into sickeningly beautiful beings. Sounds weird? You've got to see it.

Dogs without homes are heartbreaking, the potential for their unconditional love untapped. You can't take them all home, but you can help them! Please join us at the walk! It is a little crazy, the dogs have a fun time and you'll get to see a wonderful and amazing variety of animals! It is a great way to spend a morning... :-)

We just got some beautiful and amazing natural artifacts in! The creations of Emil "Rocky" Fiore (and spiders) of New Jersey, these real spider webs embedded in glass are lovely to look at and such a neat conversation piece!

For over 30 years Rocky has perfected the art of "webbing", a very precise and unusual skill that he mastered through his many years of experience. Come by the boutique and check them out in person, they really are lovely. Prices range from $25 to $120 depending on the size.

Rocky is a swell guy and if you're curious how he captures these fragile beauties for us clumsy humans to possess, watch the two videos below that explain the process.

My trip to Dinosaur World.

I never know quite what to include in this blog. It is semi-random I know... :-)

This past weekend Tate and I went to Tampa to visit our friends Colin and Sas and on Saturday we decided to venture over to Dinosaur World in Plant City! It is halfway between Orlando and Tampa and totally prehistoric.

It was pretty worth it. It is just as you would hope for, very random and charmingly bad. I think kids would absolutely love it and see past the terrible paint jobs and just experience it all as magic.

I think it would make an amazing location for a fashion photo shoot. I wish someone would ask me to art direct one! :-)

Xmas "Wrap" Up!

Hope everyone had a nice holiday. I don't know about you, but it came and went SO fast!! :-) We were very busy here at the shop and I sincerely hope that everyone loved the gifts that they received... we sold all manner of items! A little something for everyone!

Popular gifts were Beatles hand-crank music boxes, the fun and functional Gama-Go pillows (gun, boombox, ham hock and more!), Lomography cameras (especially the Holga), Lusterbunny necklaces, the "I'm Saving Up for Some Good Weed" tin banks and lots of other miscellaneous fun stuff. ...oh and artwork! Sas Christian prints and art from the Small Stuff show!

That reminds me, the Small Stuff show is coming to a close! It's only up a few more days... until this Saturday night (December 29th). I'll start working on taking it down this coming Sunday. I was particularly fond of this show, there was just so much talent in it! I have decided to do a "Small Stuff 2" show next year right around the same time. It works well with the craziness of the holiday season.

Our next show opens on Saturday, January 5th and is called "Age of Myths" - all the artwork is inspired by the Greek Myths which seem to have inspired nearly ever story ever told. :-) It will be a fun, probably low-key opening night with Greek wine, and other fun surprises. Hope to see you there if you can make it!

Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of lowbrow art destroyed in Miami fire.

Hundreds of amazing and beautiful lowbrow paintings and artwork were destroyed this morning when a fire broke out in Miami Wynwood Art District's "Harold Golen Gallery" - the current exhibition was especially important due to the international art fair Art Basel, which wrapped up this past Sunday.

Among the paintings that were lost are the work of Ron English, Tim Biskup, Niagara, Mars One and most notably Skot Olsen.

The now destroyed show was called "Subjective Reality" and featured at its center ALL of the new neo-psychedelic artwork of Skot Olsen, which has taken years to complete. Destroyed in the fire were a dozen paintings by this lowbrow/pop surrealist artist who unveiling his new direction and more realistic painting style at Art Basel show this weekend.

Obviously, Skot Olsen is shocked and heartbroken and could use any support that the art community can muster. A year of work down the toilet! :-o

Yes, another month has flown by and another show has ended. Sex and Science has been taken down and the walls are being patched and readied for the next one! What a Fun Guy: The Mushroom Show opens this Saturday night, just in time for mushroom picking season!

Been taking some time the past few days to schedule some of our 2008 shows. My how time flies! Seems like only yesterday I was working a full time job and starting to think about this adventure!

For next year we are switching to a 5 weeks open schedule. A month just goes by too fast to catch my breath!

This past Saturday, our newest show, Sex and Science opened with great fanfare. In what was probably our best attended opening since the Munny show many fine folks enjoyed the musical stylings of DJ Sensative Side and looked on in awe at the burlesque demonstration of Torchy Taboo.

The is a fantastic array of artwork available, with styles and prices in a wide range. Come on by and check out the photos! I just now got them up! Trying out a new thing with PayPal cart, we plan on getting more sophisticated soon, this is only a baby step. :-)
